1 / 31UP Bouldering
📍 Chullora, NSW
Indoor bouldering gym in Chullora with a spacious layout, moon board, dedicated warm-up zone, and table tennis downstairs. Free chalk provided. Staff go out of their way to help first-timers learn safely.
Never tried bouldering before and found 1UP Bouldering as my local gym. Parking is excellent, with plenty of spots in the complex and along Anzac St, which is handy on busy nights and event days. On my first visit, Sarah at the front desk answered all my beginner questions (including how not to fall) and made getting started very easy. On later visits, other staff have been just as helpful and friendly, taking time to explain problems and offer tips. Special thanks to the team, including Jayden, Nathan, Nikki, Sky and Yuki, plus the DJs on Wednesday and Friday nights who create a great vibe. The manager, Jack, is very approachable! and clearly cares about the community and the set quality. One of the big reasons I kept coming back was a route Jack set that completely took all my focus, aesthetic wise and flow wise – I spent many sessions projecting it, and finally sending my first proper project here was an amazing feeling of accomplishment. The climbing itself is great: the grades feel fair, with a good spread for beginners through to more experienced climbers, and the sets change often enough to keep things interesting. The strip team who remove old sets and the setters who create new puzzles do an awesome job keeping the walls fresh and engaging. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the climbing community here is respectful and encouraging, even if you turn up on your own. Personal feeling? I liked it enough to get a membership and I’m now in here regularly. Say hi The gym has plenty of space to hang out between climbs, plus extras like board games, some traditional gym equipment and table tennis. There is free chalk around the gym, it is pet‑friendly (there are often very friendly dogs around), and there’s even an anonymous feedback box if you’re introverted but still want to share suggestions. Shout out as well to the new owners, Ben and Amanda, who seem committed to continuing the great atmosphere and community feel. The location is also a plus, with food options nearby such as Hot Stone Café next door which provides discount if climb at 1Up (see conditions in photos) and Memos Kebabs a short drive away. Overall, it’s an easy place to recommend if you’re new to bouldering or looking for a welcoming local gym
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with older kids and teens who are new to bouldering — the beginner support here is exceptional, and the non-intimidating atmosphere makes first visits easy. The spacious layout means groups can spread out and try routes at their own pace. Younger children under the gym's minimum age should check requirements before visiting.

“Great gym. Feels very spacious compared to some of the other gyms in Sydney. They have a moon board and a good warm up area. The downstair area with the table tennis is great to warm down in. The gym also puts on some great events to keep things interesting. The main draw of this gym is the friendly staff especially Jack who is a seasoned climber. As a beginner if I need help with beta or a second opinion I always keep an eye out for Jack as he always gives great, non judgemental advice and tries to help figure out the right beta for me despite the difference in our levels. Jack has helped me build up the confidence to climb more regularly.”

“I’ve had such a great experience at the gym thanks to the amazing management, especially Jack. He’s incredibly supportive, genuinely engaged with the climbing community, and always goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. You can really see the effort he puts into maintaining a positive atmosphere—especially in the bouldering area, which he’s helped transform into such an enjoyable, well-run space. His passion for climbing and for the people who come through the doors really shows. Couldn’t recommend this gym enough with leadership like his!”

“Where do I start? 1UP bouldering is such a inviting and amazing place to Climb and spend time. The community here is very welcoming and friendly all around, the perfect place to spend a friday night and spend time with friends challenging yourself on either introductory climbs or all the way to expert ones. My brother and I are here regularly and must say it will likely be for a very long time. The staff are very kind and helpful, and the Owners are the best. 10/10 Would recommend visiting.”
