Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre
π Beaconsfield, TAS
Over 10,000 objects and 30 interactive displays covering Tasmanian gold mining history and the dramatic 2006 Beaconsfield mine rescue. Kids can operate machinery, use vintage phones, pan for treasures, and crawl through tunnels.
One of the best museums I've been to. If you visit Launceston or Northern Tasmania, I highly suggest you visit the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Museum. I loved seeing all the old machinery and items. The kids enjoyed using the old phones. Reading about the rock fall and seeing displays related to it was fantastic. To read more about how they were rescued, and to bits and pieces used was amazing, but also gave goosebumps for how lucky they were. Reading statements from people involved in rhe rescue was good, and reading Rex Johnson's pulled at my heart. Having a young boy asking you to bring his dad home, and in the moment not knowing if you could would have been difficult.
π Family Action Verdict
An excellent museum for school-age children who engage with history and interactive learning. The 2006 rescue narrative gives the visit an emotional anchor that older kids in particular respond to. Toddlers can navigate with a pram and enjoy the sensory displays. A playground across the road extends the outing.

βA must visit! Brilliant museum. The staff were lovely. There were so many things for the children to interact with plus they received a sticker and precious stones at the end of our visit. They were very excited. The museum is very informative and well curated. Couldnβt recommend it more.β

βA great look at the Beaconsfield mine but also a step back into the past, great for kids or adults who are interested in the mines / the great rescue. Thereβs a playground across the road and a pub nearby too.β
