Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden
📍 Olinda, VIC
Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in Olinda spans 36 hectares of native and exotic plantings, including the National Rhododendron Garden. Wide, gentle paths suit prams and young walkers. The lakeside cafe provides a natural stopping point.
An Absolutely Amazing Day Out at the Dandenong Ranges National Rhododendron Garden! My recent visit to the National Rhododendron Garden was absolutely amazing—a truly beautiful escape into nature! The colours and scents of the gardens were breathtaking, providing a serene and relaxing environment perfect for strolling and exploring. I was particularly impressed with the facilities and overall accessibility. Finding a ( not very well-maintained) toilet was not easy, but having at least such a thing in the middle of the garden was very helpful. And the on-site shop was a wonderful surprise. I loved that we could buy some plants to take home and enjoy the garden's beauty a little longer while having ice creams. Crucially, the garden is highly commendable for its wheelchair entrance, ensuring that this stunning natural retreat is accessible to everyone. The staff have clearly made an effort to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable for all visitors. If you are looking for a beautiful, tranquil, and well-equipped garden experience in the Dandenongs, I highly recommend a visit. We can't wait to return!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families who enjoy nature walks and open-air exploration. Young children have room to roam freely on the wide paths, and the gentle terrain suits prams. Spring visits coincide with rhododendron flowering — the most visually striking time to visit. Plan a two-hour minimum to cover the main garden zones.

“This garden in lovely Olinda is one of my very favourites to go to in any season. I used to live in Ferny Creek so know what an amazing area the Dandenong Ranges is. This botanical garden hides an abundance of native and overseas tree species, plants and flowers. The paths wander through the landscape and offer open spaces to sit down, read a book or have a picnic. The pound with water lilies is gorgeous and there is so much to enjoy, that coming back again is different every time. The cafe and gift shop were unfortunately closed when we visited, understandable because of bush fire danger meetings of all staff. It’s unbelievable the entrance is free, thank you for making this special place 😊”

“Visited in mid-October with an elderly. The flowers were stunningly beautiful. We did not walk through the entire garden, only the area near the entrance including Chelsea Australian Garden, and it was already enough for us. We spent about two hours there. My mother really enjoyed taking her time to admire the flowers slowly. It is great and free to visit. There are several toilets in the garden. The souvenirs were not overpriced as well. Highly recommended.”

“My pictures do not do justice to the beauty of Dandenong Ranges Botanical Garden. A must if you are here for a day. Great place for kids and older people. Take the easy walk ( flat surface) 30mins, seat at the lakeside for a simple picnic or a longer walk, a full round in the park with different areas to look at in different time of the year.”

Overview
This botanic garden in the Dandenong Ranges is split into distinct garden zones — the Chelsea Australian Garden, the National Rhododendron Collection, towering exotic trees, and lakeside walks. Paths range from flat 30-minute loops to longer full-circuit routes. The garden is at its most spectacular during spring rhododendron season. A cafe operates on site during opening hours. Parking can be tight on busy spring weekends — midweek visits are significantly calmer.
