Absolutely blown away by Field Black Cafe! From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the beautiful design and attention to detail—it’s clear a lot of thought went into creating such a welcoming space. The food was next level: fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. Service was equally impressive—friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. It’s rare to find a place where everything hits the mark like this. We’ll definitely be regulars here!

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with older children comfortable in a relaxed cafe setting — the menu skews adventurous and the atmosphere rewards those who aren't in a rush. Toddler-specific facilities are unconfirmed, so plan accordingly for very young kids. Pairs well with a walk to nearby Northcote parklands after brunch.

Came in for breakfast and wow, was that a brilliant choice; the food here and the experience is absolutely outstanding! Ordered the french toast and eggs benedict between the two of us, and as soon as the food came out we were just blown away by the beautiful presentation! Every ingredient of the dishes was so fresh and was important to the dish. You could tell how much thought the chef has put into planning the dishes. The coffees were also great. The ambience of the cafe is lovely too, as the decor is gorgeous and the environment just feels great. The waitress who served us was extremely polite and sweet. 10/10 recommend!

We chose this cafe for brunch last Saturday. It was pleasantly busy. The menu is extraordinary - right down my alley of unusual savoury selections. I found it very difficult to decide but settled on Brunch Okonomiyaki. I could have easily had Sauteed Wild Mushrooms which was my husband's choice. Both meals were generous in size, and both were delicious. My only criticism with the Japanese pancake was that it was too thick in the centre making it a bit stodgy so I just left it. The flavours were a delightful combination. Coffees were great too!

Overview

Field Black's moody interior on High St is a standout in Northcote's dense cafe strip. The kitchen leans into bold, unusual savory dishes: Brunch Okonomiyaki, Sauteed Wild Mushrooms, Turkish breakfast, Eggs Benedict with striking presentation. A beer garden softens the dark-toned dining room. Reviewers consistently single out the food as exceptional and the space as genuinely considered in its design.
