Halls Gap Zoo
📍 Halls Gap, VIC
Halls Gap Zoo is set against the Grampians ranges and houses over 160 native and exotic species. Visitors hand-feed free-roaming kangaroos and deer, watch meerkats, and access regular animal encounter sessions.
A visit to Halls Gap Zoo is a total must when visiting Halls Gap as it’s such a beautiful special place. You get to interact with the beautiful free roaming kangaroos and deer which you get to feed by hand and you just buy that on your way in which is cheap too. The deer get a bit cheeky but they’re so super cute and fun! It has a wide variety of different animals and bird life, it’s especially great for the kids as it’s not a large zoo so you’re not walking around all day, but do see a lot of all types of animals. The staff are so very lovely and friendly and make you feel like part of their zoo family there. There’s also shows they put on and feeding the other animals which is easily booked. There’s never any huge lines to wait in so even if you don’t book your tickets it’s fine. It’s an amazing affordable time out but so hard to leave, I wouldn’t have left if I didn’t have to! Their prices are fair and the merchandise isn’t overpriced like all other zoos. I want to thank Halls Gap Zoo for their kindness and hard work xo
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families visiting the Grampians who want a wildlife day that works in any weather — the covered enclosures and active animals keep the experience engaging even on overcast Victorian days. The free-roaming deer are particularly popular with younger children. Allow two to three hours for the full circuit including encounter sessions.

“I recently visited this zoo with my child, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. It’s a perfect place for kids—safe, engaging, and full of exciting encounters. The zoo has an impressive variety of animals, not just from Australia but from all around the world, including Africa and America. We loved seeing the cheetah, meerkats, different types of monkeys, and the beautiful peacocks. One of the most special experiences was the animals that freely roam around you. Hearing the hens clucking and dogs hooting in the distance made the whole environment feel like a real jungle. The American bison was a major highlight—truly a magnificent animal and worth the visit alone. With around 120 species, there is so much to explore and learn. Overall, it’s a fantastic family-friendly zoo that gives both kids and adults a memorable day out. Highly recommended!”

“A great little zoo with a relaxed vibe and plenty to see. Grabbed a food bag each at the entrance and had a blast feeding the friendly deer; it definitely added to the experience. The meerkats were hilarious, constantly popping up and checking us out like tine security guards. Paths are easy to follow which helped when a deer ate my map! We saw a good mix of native and exotic animals and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Halls Gap Zoo is definitely worth a visit if you're in the Grampians area.”

“We really loved our experience of the Halls Gap Zoo! Rocked up on a semi rainy day but with rain jacket in tow was able to withstand the classic Victorian weather to see all animals on display as they weren't hiding but out for us to see! Highly recommended place to come and visit as we found the quiet nature and east to follow path guiding you around the zoo easier to follow and better experience than our experiences even at Taronga Zoo! Will be back for sure for some of the experiences!”

Overview
Halls Gap Zoo mixes native Australian animals with exotic species from Africa and the Americas. Kangaroos and deer roam freely through the visitor path and come directly to guests holding feed bags, which are sold at entry. The meerkat enclosure is a crowd favourite, with the animals highly active and curious. Regular keeper-led encounter sessions let kids get closer to selected residents. Paths are flat and easy to follow throughout.
