Nice place to spend few hours. We did come back after several years. The parking close at 5 pm. On the exit you need ticket purchased from machine ( $15 per car). The main trail to the Hanging Rock summit is considered moderate. Round walk is nice, weather you take stairs or choose the path. We spent couple of hours here, but surely there is much more to see if you want to spend half of the day.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with reasonably fit school-age children who can handle a 45-to-60-minute moderate hike with steep sections. The summit views and unusual rock formations hold genuine appeal for kids with an interest in nature or geology. Toddlers in carriers can manage the easier lower sections.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Walk up the ramp path and descend the steps to see different rock formations
⏰Parking closes at dusk β€” check the posted time on arrival
🎟️The on-site cafe is worth stopping at after the summit walk
πŸš—Blue-tongue lizards and rabbits are regularly spotted on the trails

β€œModerate difficulty walk as steep in places. Reasonable fitness required. I recommend walking up the ramp and down the steps so you get to see different features. Great views from the summit. Took about an hour up and down. Visitor centre, coffee and gift shop. $15 entry for car. Plenty of parking. Really interesting volcanic features.”

β€œGreat place for short hike and get connected with nature. We encountered a Rabbit and a blue tongue Lizard on our way. Plenty of parking available. Overall 10 out of 10 experience, will visit again if got a chance to. Not to mention but this Hanging rock cafe has the best coffee too.”

β€œThe trek itself was not too bad. Doable for most people. Probably 45mts to an hour to get up to the summit, obviously depending on your speed. The view is beautiful from the top. Only downside for me was I don't think there were directions to get down unless I missed the obvious 🀷.”

Overview

Hanging Rock rises from the Macedon Ranges as a 6.5-million-year-old volcanic mamelon with distinctive weathered columns and caves. The main summit trail is graded moderate β€” steep in sections, with both a ramp path and stair descent offering different perspectives on the formations. The return walk takes approximately one hour at a steady pace. The reserve also holds a wildlife sanctuary, open grassy picnic zones, and a playground. The on-site cafe is noted for good coffee.
