Have visited a few times with large and small groups. The volunteer team who runs the train do a sensational job and it’s a wonderful day out. Different options for train journeys are on offer but I’d highly recommend The Afghan Express, this full day journey from Port Augusta to Quorn and return travels the full length of the railway and offers some spectacular views of the train and surrounding area.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for train-loving kids and families with an interest in Australian outback history. The volunteer guides are passionate and knowledgeable — they make the journey rather than the scenery alone. The Afghan Express is the standout experience; the Explorer suits families with younger children or sparse time.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡The Afghan Express (full-day Port Augusta–Quorn return) delivers the most complete experience and best scenery
Confirm what is included in your ticket — some items like food at stops cost extra
🎟️The Sunset Run to Woolshed Flats includes a catered meal and is worth booking separately
🚗Bring cameras — the Flinders Ranges backdrop and steam engine make for striking photos

Great experience for the family. Just a little bit pricey for a family ticket for a 35 min ride one way, then an hour lunch break, then 35 minute ride back. Scones and a coffee was kind of advertised as free at halfway point but was another cost. Is run by all volunteers so I take my hat off to all the members that run it and I hope it runs for a long time. It is a piece of great Australian history

Sunset Run to Woolshed Flats was good. Fantastic volunteers both on the train and at Woolshed Flats ( doing the catering). Great steak sandwich for $11.00. Congratulations to all volunteers, not only for the tours but the whole program of restoring and maintaining the lines and the rolling stock. Great job!

A great morning spent on the Pichi Richi Explorer to Woolshed Flat and return. Picturesque scenery, friendly and informative volunteers, especially Mike, who was in our carriage. It's wonderful that our heritage is being preserved. Thanks again for a memorable outing with our grandchildren.

Overview

Pichi Richi Railway is entirely volunteer-run, operating restored carriages on the original Ghan route through rugged Flinders Ranges scenery past gum-lined creeks and rocky outcrops. The Afghan Express runs the full Port Augusta–Quorn return — a full day with guides narrating the history of each section. Shorter options include the Pichi Richi Explorer to Woolshed Flat with a lunch break. The Sunset Run to Woolshed Flats adds a catered meal component.
