1 / 3Portland Cable Trams
π Portland, VIC
Volunteer-operated vintage trams running a 7.4km hop-on hop-off route along Portland coastline, connecting the Maritime Discovery Centre, Powerhouse Museum, WWII Memorial, and Botanic Gardens. Day pass covers unlimited rides.
Wonderful vintage trams and run by very friendly volunteers. Commentary is provided as you make your 7.4 km journey from the depot, along the front up to the Water Tower and back. There are several stops along the way at some of the townβs attractions. To make the most of your day ticket, plan your visits to the attractions to coincide with the tram taking you to the next stop or returning to the depot. I would recommend the 10:00 am tram to maximise your day if you plan to stop off. At the Memorial Lookout at the end of the line, the tram will give you time to visit the lookout overlooking the bay. We visited the Military Water Tower (recommended) and caught the next tram to return. The driver even stopped when koalas were spotted in the trees. Options to sit in the covered tram car, or the outside one (blankets available). There is a small museum, shop and model railway display at the depot. Plenty of parking (including caravans), with toilets as well.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families on a Gippsland or Great Ocean Road trip who want to combine coastal sightseeing with hands-on heritage stops. The day-pass format rewards families who treat it as a full-day itinerary across multiple venues rather than a single tram ride.

βHad an amazing time on the Portland Cable Tram β it was great fun from start to finish. The trams are very well operated, clean, and maintained, which makes the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. A special mention to our tram driver Bruce β an extremely knowledgeable and friendly person who shared so many interesting stories about Portlandβs history, landmarks, and local life. His passion for the town really made the ride extra special and engaging. This is a fantastic way to explore Portland, especially if youβre visiting for the first time. You get great views, learn about the townβs rich history, and enjoy a relaxed, family-friendly experience. I would definitely recommend the Portland Cable Tram to tourists β itβs a must-visit attraction and well worth the time. A great experience overall!β

βI really love this tram ride. The staff are very friendly. The tram ride was very informative as well, you get to learn about a little of Portlands history, the sites along the coastline, the port and the buildings in the city centre. The trams are well maintained. And the tram conductors have lots of stories to share about their city and it's history. They even stop the tram for us to see a koala up a eucalyptus tree by the caravan park. If you have days or even just 1-1.5 hrs to spend in Portland, do this tram ride (just take note of the timeline)... you will not regret it. And bonus, they have a museum in the building. Good to look around before or after the tram ride. No entrance fee for the museum, just gold coin donation to enter.β

βBought tickets on the day! It's a day pass - so feel free to go on as many rides as you want on the same day. Run by very friendly volunteers and such a great way to listen to the history of the town while enjoying spectacular views of the port! The driver is very jolly and the trip was very enjoyable. We'll definitely be doing this again when we are back in town. Being able to sit on the sidelines and enjoy the views, there was something very peaceful about it π§‘β
