Hands-on farm experience run by knowledgeable owners. Kids bottle-feed lambs, brush ponies, hold guinea pigs, and interact with a wide variety of farm animals in a relaxed rural setting north of Ballarat.

As for me, well I had the best time and wouldn’t hesitate to take children there as it is a beautiful way to learn about living on the land, about the responsibility of looking after animals and to experience something that most people only ever see in books or on TV. Michael enjoyed the stay immensely also, as there were photo opportunities everywhere. Janet and Ian share their remarkable, often difficult lives, and their home, living in the most beautiful country with the most amazing creatures. Take a break away with them and see their passion and lifestyle first-hand, but don’t expect to stay clean as it is a working farm!

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children aged 3-10 who want genuine animal contact beyond a petting zoo. The owner-led format means quality varies by session energy, and the rural location suits families comfortable with a proper country drive. City kids who have never bottle-fed a lamb or collected feathers get the most out of it.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Book ahead β€” as a family-run operation, availability is sparse
⏰Ask about the hand-raised kangaroos; they roam freely and come in at feeding times
🎟️Bring clothes that can get dirty β€” this is a working farm
πŸš—Guests who stay multiple nights report the early morning animal feed as a highlight

β€œWe spent 3 nights here and it was so peaceful and relaxing. Your choice to do nothing or help on the farm. Early morning start to feed all the animals, later afternoon to check again and evening feeding or the kangaroos. Hand raised a free to come and go as they like. Blissful.”

β€œGreat farm and great variety of animals. Owner was super helpful and has great knowledge. Animals are well looked after. We got to hold some guinea pigs and feed various different animals. Collected some special feathers too. Wonderful experience for my kids.”

β€œJanet was just wonderful with my grandchildren. She is truly amazing running this animal welfare. I only wish I lived closer so I could help her.”

Overview

Tinakori Animal Farm operates as a working rural property with a genuine variety of animals β€” alpacas, ponies, lambs, guinea pigs, kangaroos, and more. Owners lead visitors through hands-on sessions including bottle feeding and animal handling. Rare feathers, educational conversations about farm care, and kangaroos that roam freely and come in by hand distinguish it from standard farm attractions.
