📍 Adelaide, SA
Adelaide Zoo houses 2,400-plus animals across 200 species in eight hectares of botanic gardens. Daily keeper talks, animal feeds, and a free-flight bird show run year-round. Giant pandas are the headline attraction.
Great zoo! Perfect size if visiting with kids! We visited early in the morning as it was going to be super hot. When buying the tickets we were advised that many animals will be utilising different parts of their shelters to stay cool but that this may mean they were out of sight. Knowing this we hit the pandas first and were greeted with them both tucking into their bamboo breakfast. From there we followed the trails in an anti-clockwise directions seeing the orange bellied parrots (!!! So very rare in the wild), the environmental centre and down to the alligators. My son had convinced me to grab a "zoo-baru" as his form of transport for the morning and they are fairly heavy. It was super manageable to use in all areas except going down to the alligators. We stopped for a break at the café, they had opened up the function room next door for an air-conditioned space that was very well received by all of us in there! By this time of the morning many of the monkeys, tigers and birds were hiding in cooler parts of their enclosures. Which was unfortunate but totally understandable! For those visiting with small kids there is also a fairly large playground that looked super fun!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 3 to 10 who want a manageable, walkable zoo without the scale of larger capital-city zoos. Visit early morning on hot days — staff advise at ticketing if animals are likely sheltering from heat. Panda feeding time is the unmissable highlight; head there first before the crowds build.

“Perfect day with family. Safe place, really clean and affordable. Staff amazing and kind. Memories for life. Bring your water bottle, you can refill it. You can bring your own food, there are places to sit and enjoy it. Don't forget the merchant store at the end, really cute fluffy toys.”

“Love panda, they are extremely cute and sweet. They are so happy and healthy. They are very active and playing all the time, climbing up and down, searching food, have a lot fun. Must visit, highly recommend.”

“Small enough to enjoy the walk around, though it was 37°C when we visited and the limited shaded spots made it a bit too hot to be comfy. The panda exhibit is amazing and the keeper was very knowledgeable and friendly. Thoroughly recommend arriving at panda feeding time for a full experience. Not many fully indoor cafes amenities or food options if you're planning a lunch... But if you enjoy the sun it is fine. Bats in the botanic gardens are a bonus.”
