1 / 3Blackbutt Reserve
π Kotara, NSW
Free-entry wildlife reserve in Kotara with close encounters with koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and peacocks in a natural bush setting. Wildlife exhibitions run daily. Pram-friendly paths and picnic tables throughout.
Overall evaluation: πΏπ¨ A very soothing experience This place is truly perfect for leisurely exploration and observing the animals quietly. The overall environment of the park is quite natural, not the kind of commercialized and noisy zoo. Instead, it somewhat resembles entering a small wildlife reserve. One can get a close-up view of many Australian unique animals, such as koalas, kangaroos, peacocks, and various colorful birds. Koalas mostly sleep in trees, which is really soothing to look at (laughing). Kangaroos are also very laid-back and completely not afraid of people. The activity space of the animals seems quite large, and it's obvious that they are well taken care of. There are many green plants in the park. Walking inside is very comfortable, giving you a feeling like "strolling in a forest". Taking photos here also results in great shots. The overall pace is not fast, making it very suitable for relaxing, strolling around and having a look. If there is anything to criticize, it might be that the park is not particularly large, but the content is very exquisite and won't make people feel that it's insincere. Overall, it is definitely worth visiting, especially for those who love animals, nature and taking photos, as they will surely enjoy it here. Recommendation rating: ββββ
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families wanting genuine wildlife encounters in a calm, non-commercial environment without entry fees. Young children get close to animals in a relaxed setting that big-city zoos rarely match. Wildlife exhibitions operate set hours β arrive within that window to access the full animal collection.

βI visited this place on a lovely afternoon and had an amazing experience. The parking was convenient and well-organized. Birds and different animals were freely around the area, which made it both exciting and enjoyable to watch. The pleasant sound of birds created a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. There were also great facilities for barbecue and seating, making it a perfect spot to spend time. The weather was wonderful, and everything together made it a truly memorable visit.β

βI brought my family here to see the wildlife, luckily the koala was awake during our visit, wandering around before taking its position in one of the trees and slowly going back to its slumber. The park facilities are great for kids, they can interact and feed the peacocks, see kangaroos, this place even has a hiking trail. Overall, itβs a great place to visit in Newcastle with family π«Άπ»β

βI spent a lovely morning at the Blackbutt Nature Reserve and it was great! We saw wallabies, one koala, emus and much more. The park in itself is really nice and very well organized. Itβs perfect for families with kids ! We finished our morning having lunch at the park, as there are many pic nic tables. The reserve is free but the parking lot is around 6$ by hour. We had a coffee and a matcha at the cafe there and it was not really good β¦ we also waited a lot.β
