1 / 2Healesville Sanctuary
π Healesville, VIC
Healesville Sanctuary sits in the Yarra Valley bushland with native Australian wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian devils, and rare birds.
Healesville Sanctuary is a must-visit for anyone wanting to see Australiaβs unique wildlife in a stunning, natural setting. The diversity of animals and birds here is incredibleβthere is so much to see around every corner of the park. The highlights for us were definitely the up-close encounters. Being able to get so near to the kangaroos and koalas was a dream, and the parrots were absolutely vibrant and captivating. It feels much more intimate and immersive than your standard zoo. A huge shout-out to the friendly and accommodating staff. They went above and beyond to make our day special, even offering a free ride for my nephew, which made his entire trip! Itβs that kind of genuine hospitality that sets this place apart. Highly recommend for families or anyone looking to connect with nature. Weβll definitely be back!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families who prioritise quality animal interactions over quantity. The smaller footprint than a major zoo suits toddlers and elderly visitors β less walking, more encounters. Book paid animal experiences before arrival; reviewers who added them rate them the best part of the day.

βAlthough this zoo is relatively small, it has a comprehensive collection of various Australian native animals and is equipped with all kinds of facilities. A visit may take about 2 to 3 hours, and the overall experience is quite enjoyable. Itβs really great to have the chance to observe colorful rare birds up close, my favorite Australian animals like koalas and kangaroos as well. The environment here is also very close to nature. The downside is that the bird show was a bit dull, some parts even made me feel like attending a natural science lecture at school. I recommend adding more interactive elements to improve the experienceβ

βBrilliant day out for our whole family. Thoroughly recommend the Echidna & Koala Experiences which cost extra but are well worth it as you get to enter the animals environments and have personalised time with a keeper. Our keeper was Alex & she was informative, friendly and professional. The Birds of Prey show is a must see and the cafeteria food was surprisingly healthy and delicious. Throw on some comfy shoes, get out there & enjoy all the animals in their natural habitats, you wonβt be disappointed!β

βThis was such a nice surprise. Normally Iβm not a big fan of zooβs in general. But this place has done an amazing job. So many types of domestic animals to explore. The cages were large and they look very well after the animals. There are some zoo keeper talks during the day and also a bird show. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.β
