Along with Saint Francis Xavier's Cathedral this was a clear highlight and stand out of things to do in Geraldton. There has been a lot of thought put into the design and the layout with concentric circles, domes spheres and a lot of symbolism in what has been chosen to represent each different part of the memorial. I came here twice, once in the afternoon and the following day at sunrise. The area is kept clean, there are toilets nearby and it is a great place to come and reflect as well as a great place to take photos. There are informational plaques, the dome of souls made up of 645 seagull figures that represent the lives lost in the sinking of the HMAS Sydney two, there is a circle of remembrance, a stele monument with the Australian flag on top, a centrepiece with a replica ships propeller and other fine details to walk around and learn about. The Browne Town.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with school-age children who can engage with the history and symbolism of the site. A 10–15 minute self-guided visit covers all five elements, making it easy to include in a broader Geraldton itinerary.

Beautiful memorial, located on Mt Scott overlooking Geraldton, a tribute to the sailors lost when HMAS Sydney II was sunk on 19 Nov 1941. The dome of silver souls was very pretty. The waiting woman and stele symbolising the bow were very meaningful along with the wall of rememberence for the 645 sailors. Would absolutely recommend visiting. Plenty of parking.

Our visit to this memorial was made extra special by Trevor, the volunteer guide. His ability to add some moments of humour to this tragic tale was masterful and a very polished delivery. Having serve aboard HMAS SYDNEY III during the Vietnam War, I felt a deep connection with the loss of so many young Aussie sailors. RIP Mates.

Overview

The HMAS Sydney II Memorial sits on Mount Scott overlooking Geraldton, marking the loss of the warship and her 645 crew on 19 November 1941. Five interlocking elements — the Wall of Remembrance with every sailor name, the silver Dome of Souls, the Waiting Woman sculpture, the stele bow, and concentric landscaping — each carry specific symbolism. The Geraldton Voluntary Tour Guides Association runs daily tours explaining the design intent and history.
