1 / 3Kuranda Scenic Railway
π Kuranda, QLD
Two-hour heritage train journey from Cairns to Kuranda through Din Din (Barron Gorge) National Park, rising 327 metres via 15 handmade tunnels and 55 bridges. Heritage carriages over 100 years old.
Scenic rail route built early 1900s. Recommend reserving tickets in advance. Views are stunning, even though today was foggy. Pictures donβt represent well enough
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with patient, scenery-oriented children who appreciate historic rail travel and rainforest landscapes. The waterfall stops and tunnel count hold interest for children across the journey. Seat position matters β left side facing direction of travel captures the primary views.

βKuranda to Cairns on the train takes about two hours. Itβs a great experience. Throughly enjoyable. It would have be great if it was a steam train instead of a diesel engine. Love the old carriages. There are a couple of stops along the way. The stop at Barron falls is a beautiful spot to take some photos. Always have your camera ready. I found sitting on the left facing the direction of travel was the best spot for the views and scenery. Itβs a great idea to grab a drink and a snack at the Kuranda Station to take with you on board. The station is beautiful and old style. Suits the atmosphere and theme well. Best to check the timetable and plan ahead. We went on the Skyrail up to Kuranda and the train back . I really enjoyed myself. Plan your day - plan ahead.β

βFrom here, you can take a train to Cairns. The journey takes about two hours one way and includes scheduled stops at scenic viewpoints where there is time to get off and take photos. It is an enjoyable experience, but the timetable is fixed, so it is best to check the schedule and make a reservation by the day before. On board, there is only a water dispenser that does not appear very clean, so bringing your own drinks is recommended. It is also possible to travel to Kuranda by taxi, which means you can choose to take the train in only one direction. Personally, I recommend going by taxi and taking the train back to enjoy the scenery.β

βGood scenic journey, there are couple of waterfalls you can see, the train stops at those points and let you check them for few mins. There are certain number of tunnels through whole route and they explain about them as well.β
