Lakeside was the turnaround point for our trip and it is a beautiful spot to stop for a break. The facilities are modern and the scenery is great, but I have one major piece of advice for the train ride itself. You absolutely must bring sunglasses with you, even if it is not a particularly sunny day. The coal dust from the steam engine flies everywhere and it can be really painful if it gets in your eyes. My eyes hurt so much from the dust, so wearing glasses is essential for protection and safety πŸ•ΆοΈ.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families who book the full Belgrave-to-Lakeside return journey and combine it with time exploring Emerald Lake Park at the destination. The open-sided carriages with dangling-leg seating are the defining experience β€” bring sunglasses as smoke and sparks from the steam engine are genuine.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Bring sunglasses regardless of weather β€” steam and sparks from the engine affect your eyes on the open carriages
⏰Sit on the platform-side of the carriage when boarding at Belgrave for the best forest views
🎟️The Night Light Train sells out well in advance β€” book as soon as dates are released
πŸš—Emerald Lake Park walking trails make the layover at Lakeside a destination in itself

β€œWent on the Puffing Billy Night Light Train and absolutely loved it! Tickets were pretty hard to get, so we felt really lucky to snag some – and it was 100% worth it. The whole experience felt magical, with beautiful light displays through the forest and a peaceful ride through the Dandenongs at night. It was such a unique and romantic evening. The train was well-kept, staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was just amazing. Highly recommend if you can get tickets!”

β€œThis was so fun! Read about this as being a must do while in Melbourne, and it truly is! Even with the weather being rainy, I felt like a kid again, sitting on the side, legs dangling on the side as the rain came down. The greenery and people working here made it so delightful.”

β€œWhat a great day and experience for the family. Beautiful day with unbelievable scenery. Worth every cent. It’s not busy but may look it. Sit on the side you get on from the train station for best views. 10/10!!”
