1 / 2The Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society
📍 West Ryde, NSW
Volunteer-run miniature steam railway in West Ryde with ground-level and elevated tracks, operating one Saturday per month. Riders can watch coal feeding and hear full steam locomotive sounds. Enclosed footwear required.
Amazing place to experience real miniature steam engines. Tickets are fairly priced. Just wear fully covered shoes and take your lunch with you as there are no food stalls inside apart from an ice cream stall. People are friendly. As soon as you arrive you can smell the fragrance of burning coal from a distanve which can bring back all your nostalgic memories of those good old real life size steam locomotives, if you happen to be old enough to be of that golden era. If you are too young for that, these all will be very new for you. Book tickets online in advance to skip waiting in the ticket counter queue. This happens only once a month - one the 3rd Saturday of each month
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for train-obsessed kids and nostalgic parents — the coal smell, steam sounds, and real locomotive mechanics create an experience no theme park ride replicates. Children from 9 months through to primary school age are consistently mentioned as loving it.

“Such a fantastic place to take your kids. Our group had a range of children from 9 months to 9 years and all the ages had a total blast, including the adults. Very great price for hours of fun. We brought a picnic mat and some snacks but got some more treats from the little kiosk. All the train drivers and volunteers were so nice and friendly. The place is really well kept and the trains themselves are magnificent. Can’t believe we are only finding out about this place now !”

“Great place to visit with kids. Plenty of families come here when there is no rain. There is a food kiosk but basically serves junk food. You need to purchase entry tickets on the website. You can line up to buy train tickets on site. Lines to trains were about 10-15mins wait. The earlier you get there, the better. Parking is not the best - basically off street parking. Be prepared to walk. Only opened 1 a month on a Saturday.”

“Nice little hidden gem. The kids loved the experience. Real miniature stem trains. They make all the noises as the larger ones. So cool how they feed the coal to the engine. It's only open every 3rd Saturday of the month. They have old school tea and coffee and small cake pieces. You can take your own food and have a picnic. I enjoyed it and I'm not a train type of nerd 🤓”

Overview
The Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society runs authentic coal-fired miniature steam locomotives at their West Ryde grounds on the third Saturday of each month. Two railway lines — ground-level and elevated — operate across the morning. Passengers smell coal smoke on arrival and can watch volunteers feed the engines. Birthday parties available. A small kiosk on site. BYO food and a picnic mat recommended.
