🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children under 10 looking for an unhurried, free outing. The combination of varied animals, a playground, and picnic facilities makes this a complete half-day without the cost of a major attraction. The compact size works in its favour for toddlers who tire quickly. Bring a packed lunch and a donation for the keepers.

Pack a picnic lunch to use the shaded tables within the gardens
🎟️The zoo covers easily in 60–90 minutes — combine with the broader Alexandra Park for a longer outing

Overview

Alexandra Park Zoo is a compact, council-operated facility in central Bundaberg running entirely on donations. Animal residents include cotton-top tamarins, emus, a wallaby, dingoes, goannas, snakes, parrots, and black cockatoos. The grounds are well-maintained with shaded picnic tables, a children's playground, and pram-friendly paths. The small scale means it is easy to cover in 60–90 minutes — not overwhelming for young children.
