1 / 3Central Deborah Gold Mine
📍 Bendigo, VIC
Real underground gold mine in Bendigo operational from 1939–1954, yielding 929kg of gold. Tours descend 61 metres into authentic tunnels. Children must be 3+ for underground access; surface museum and heritage buildings accessible to all.
I can’t even begin to say how amazing this was. It was absolutely amazing. Hearing the stories of the brave men who gave their time and even some their lives to find gold in just one of the very many mines in this area and how they lived and the processes of the job was just truly fascinating. I am grateful for the opportunity to have gotten to come and hear their stories and see a glimpse into the world they lived in day to day. A huge thank you and recommendation to book this tour. You won’t regret it! Only thing you’ll regret is not booking it. Fantastic experience. Tour guide was funny, helpful, very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job. And yes…you do see gold😂.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 3+ who want a genuine underground experience rather than a simulated one. Guide quality is exceptional — kids stay engaged through the full 75 minutes. Families with under-3s get the surface museum only, which is informative as it is a different experience entirely.

“It was a great experience visiting the Central Deborah Gold Mine in Bendigo. It operated from 1939 to 1954 to a depth of 422 metres. It yielded 929 Kg of gold from its mining operations. The best part was going 61m underground with a hard hat ON to see how the gold mine workers worked in those days and how gold was mined from there. The tour guides were quite knowledgeable and kept everyone engaged throughout the tour. The Surface tour is a great way to know more about the gold mine and how things operated back in the days. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Bendigo.”

“My family and I had a great time during our visit to Central Deborah! The last time I visited was 15 years ago and it was so special bringing my kids back to a place I loved seeing in the past! Baz led our mine tour and was so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! He kept the little kids interested and knew how to get the group talking! Thanks Baz and the rest of the team! Can’t wait to come back once we’re allowed deeper in the mine!”

“Amazing! Our guide Ollie had so much information to give but also so much more with questions people asked! We felt safe and confident in his knowledge and navigating the mines. Such a fun experience, cannot wait to return for the new tour coming soon! Thanks Ollie! From Sarah and Ollie!”
