1 / 2National Railway Museum
π Port Adelaide, SA
National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide holds a large collection of steam engines, diesel locomotives, historic carriages, and railway memorabilia.
A brilliant place with really interesting and informative exhibits. The staff, mainly volunteers, are really friendly and go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your visit. You have to have a ride on the miniature train as well! Highly recommended.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 3 and up who have any interest in trains, machines, or history. The open-access cockpits and miniature train rides give young children tactile engagement beyond just looking at displays. Older kids and adults with a genuine interest in Australian rail history will find enough depth to occupy two-plus hours.

βTook a ride to Port Adelaide to check out the National Railway Museum located next to Port Dock station. A large and impressive museum showcasing Australia's history of rail travel from steam engines to today's locomotives. The evolution of the rail system and facilities on board is also like a mini history lesson through Australia's short life as a country. Seeing heated seats, or the advent of toilets, the addition of sleeping beds or the kitchen with dining cart, to air conditioning especially needed through the harsh hot conditions of the outback, are some of the things we take for granted today. I think what took the cake for me was the white car which enabled banking - a mobile Commonwealth Bank branch on the train! For the big kid in us, jump on the mini train to take a ride around the yard and see some of the trains about. At the very back is another shed to access containing more trains. Impressive museum and also the friendly staff, many whom are volunteers, that help make this place great.β

βI had a wonderful experience at the National Railway Museum. The gentlemen at the entrance were so welcoming and kind, and I could really feel their passion for railways and their enthusiasm for their work. Their friendliness made the visit even more special. Although I only had a short time before closing, I truly enjoyed exploring the museum, itβs fascinating and full of history. Itβs a pity Iβm leaving Adelaide tonight, but Iβll definitely come back to spend more time here in the future. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Adelaide!β

βLovely little school holidays visit. Not really my thing, but my boys loved it (5yo's) Well set out Lovely friendly staff/volunteers It would have been more interesting if you could go inside more trains or even put lights in the ones you can't so you can see in them better. Cute little train ridesβ

Overview
The National Railway Museum occupies a substantial yard in Port Adelaide with locomotives spanning the steam era through to modern diesel. Several carriages and cockpits are open for kids to climb aboard. A miniature train runs circuits of the yard β consistently called out as a highlight for younger visitors. A flight simulator adds a hands-on element. Passionate volunteer staff provide historical context across the collection.
