Seaworks Maritime Museum
📍 Williamstown, VIC
Seaworks Maritime Museum in Williamstown is a volunteer-run gem housing detailed ship models, maritime artefacts, and the full history of Port Gellibrand. Knowledgeable guides bring the displays to life with personal storytelling.
Absolutely wonderful exhibition. $5 entry and more than worth every cent. Volunteer run, so if you can donate a bit extra it would be very well received. I chipped in an extra twenty for a Seaworks cap 😄 An amazing tour through the maritime history of Williamstown and Port Gellibrand. The model recreations of shipping vessels through the ages are excellent. You'll find out more than you ever thought you could know about the early days of the town that was the first port of call for sea travel from Tasmania, a hub of the goldfields railway, a Confederate pirate ship, and the potential capital of Victoria before Melbourne was considered. Ask the lovely staff nicely if you can see inside the convict built mausoleum. That's a story all by itself. Along the way you'll see the remains of the Gellibrand Light. I could go on forever....
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for children aged 8 and up with an interest in ships, naval history, or model-making — the model collection and guide storytelling hold attention well. At under 30 minutes for a full circuit, it fits neatly into a Williamstown foreshore day alongside the pier and fish and chips. The volunteer-run model means a donation is well received.
