The Briars Wildlife Sanctuary
đ Mount Martha, VIC
Fenced sanctuary on the Mornington Peninsula with a 2km wetlands boardwalk loop, two glass-paned bird hides overlooking marshland, and resident wallabies, bandicoots, echidnas, and Eastern Rosellas. Heritage homestead on site.
A varying terrain bushwalk that can be done by most on short board walk over the wetlands area with 2 cabin style glass paned bird hides set apart. Beyond this - it is an undulating uneven trail that goes uphill & down but not overly strenuous. There are continuing trails over board walk going towards the Bay following Balcombe Creek but this is closed due to flood damage. From the birdhide you will be able to spot the usual waterbirds, fairy wrens, swallows & the visiting Cape Barren Goose!. Emus wander about & lots of swamp wallabies & roos. Free entry into this wildlife Sanctuary. Car parking close to Visitor's Centre which has toilets. You can combine with the seasonal Briars Community Market - check Craft Markets Vic for details. Unfortunately the Briars Homestead with Napoleon Bonaparte's artefacts is still closed & has been for a very long time. Visitors Centre has interesting exhibits, gift shop, ice-cream & snacks. This visit was on 21st September 2025 - the month before.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with curious kids who enjoy slow nature walks and wildlife spotting rather than fast-paced activities. The flat wetlands boardwalk suits most ages including young children; the longer bush trails involve uneven terrain. Wildlife sightings â especially echidnas â create genuine excitement.

âWent for a walk inside the fenced off region. It has been set up this way to protect the animals from feral animals. There is a bird watching shelter with windows to look across the wet lands. I have been here before and seen wallabies and an echidna, but tkme we saw a couple of bandicoots. It a great walk, but the path in places becomes rugged. I saw a father taking his young children through there. I was there with my wife and sister-in-law. We are seniors keeping fit, enjoying nature.â

âDid the wetlands walk which was peaceful and easy to complete. A short 2km loop. We came across flocks of Eastern Rosella and wallabies but sadly no koala sighting. There's a longer walk and other places to explore so worth another visit.â

âSo beautiful out here!! The wetlands walk was gorgeous - bird hideouts and a lookout, plus plenty of boardwalk space to wander along and a visitor centre with clean and well maintained bathrooms.â
