1 / 3The Ice ArenA
๐ Thebarton, SA
Adelaide's established ice skating venue in Thebarton with a main competition rink and a separate smaller rink for beginners and training. Penguin aids and support bars available. Free underground parking on weekends.
The only ice arena in Adelaide. Parking underground is free on weekends. Older venues so keeping that in mind when reviewing. The parking does have drop spots in some areas so choose a spot that doesnโt drip. You donโt need to pre buy tickets. Skate hire is included and the price is very reasonable. There is a smaller rink for those training, with penguins and support bars available. The venue doesnโt really get cold, especially if you are skating so a light jacket or jumper needed if you are sitting around. Definitely wear thick long socks to prevent chafing. There are arcade type games available for a separate charge. There is food available to buy. Expect a 15 minute break in your session for re-icing of the surface, great for snack time. The ice will be a lot more slippery afterwards so re-enter with care. You can have a birthday party here. They do not sell tickets or gift cards on the website. I would highly recommend for a great family fun day. They have teen specific dates as well.
๐ Family Action Verdict
The only option for ice skating in Adelaide, and it delivers a genuine rink experience across all skill levels. The separate beginners' rink removes pressure for first-timers, and penguin aids make it accessible for young children. The facility shows its age in places, so align expectations accordingly.

โIโve been playing hockey here for close to 2 years and I think itโs very well run. Public skating good fun with your friends and all the staff are very kind and is always there to help you. The rink itself is starting to get a bit old now but the staff and managers are working on that.โ

โGreat facility - have played Broomball Nationals here. Love that there is more than one rink. However cafe didn't cater to all times. Parking underneath was great.โ

โI donโt understand the reviews people have made on here. Yes the facility is dated and you have to take that into account, but itโs actually a bit of a dump. This place is like something out of indie American comedy where kids with Saturday jobs run the place. My first interaction with the skate hire boy was interesting. I asked for a size 10 for my 3.5 year old - he gave me size 2. I asked why, he shrugged and said we donโt have any left. I then asked if there was much difference between a 2 and 10. His response was yeah thereโs quite a lot - but he didnโt have any so itโs not his problem. At this stage I was looking round for the hidden cameras. Itโs pretty dirty all round. We ventured on the ice which was a little wild with only one point of entry so a bottle neck. The wall round the outside is wooden, rotten and has chunks missing so it was a great opportunity for a splinter. The ice surface wasnโt to flash either - the ice didnโt fully meet the wide walls - just messy and uneven. Baring in mind the place had been open for 20 minutes. People were skating in all directions with nobody supervising this. Gave up after 5 minutes as the skates clearly werenโt supporting my son and were unsafe. They did give me a refund as I explained about the skates. The young lad on the reception refunded me and asked if I wanted a receipt- I didnโt realise he would have to leave the front desk and go through to the cafe to get one. My wife took our baby into the toilets to change him and reported that they were also pretty poorly maintained. I think itโs a shame thereโs no competition in the market - this isnโt really acceptable. I feel people and Adelaide deserves better than this. Itโs tired, lazy and rude if we are honest.โ
