1 / 2Uncle Nev's Trail Rides
π Upper Plenty, VIC
Family-owned operation offering 1, 2, and 3-hour trail rides through 250 acres of scenic bushland in the Mount Disappointment State Forest foothills. Guides match horses to each rider skill level from beginner to intermediate.
I just got back from a three hour ride with Uncle Nev's and it was awesome! Initial phone contact was friendly and professional, the lady was straight on to working out my capabilities (limited - I can trot and canter) and what I was looking for. Arrival at the property was lovely. There are happy looking, well cared for horses everywhere. I was introduced to my leader/guide Charlie who was lovely and very switched on. Again, asked what I was capable of and what I was looking to do. Straight on and out and about. Ten minutes or so through flat farmland which was a nice way to settle in. Then into the proper bush, picking our way through narrow single trails, over fallen trees and a chance to trot and canter up some open uphill sections. Again, Charlie took the time to work out my ability and to check in that I was right to go before speeding up. A short, well-needed break at the homestead before continuing back down through the state forest and some dirt roads until we re-entered the property a kilometre or so from home. We saw heaps of wildlife. Many bunnies and kangaroos and also two echidnas. This trip totally exceeded my expectations and I am already planning the next trip with my daughter who is a complete beginner.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families introducing kids aged 10 and up to horseback riding. The guides are patient and focused on safety without removing the sense of adventure. Riders describe their horses as well-loved and clearly content. The bush setting β including wildlife sightings β elevates the experience beyond a standard riding school circuit.

βI had a great horse-riding trip today. Even though I arrived late because of heavy traffic, the team was very understanding and accommodating. My horse, Judy, was amazing, and the guides were friendly, supportive, and made the ride enjoyable. The only downside was the attitude of the staff member at the office when we first arrived. When I asked to choose a helmet that suited me, her response felt unfriendly, impatient, and not welcoming. Aside from that, everyone else on the team was lovely and very cooperative. The trail itself was fantasticβriding in the light rain, enjoying the scenery, and even spotting kangaroos made the experience truly memorable. I would definitely come back again!β

βYesterday, I took my kids to experience horseback riding for the first time. I was very nervous at the beginning because I'm not very athletic and was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle it. But the staff were incredibly kind and patient, not only teaching us carefully but also ensuring everyone's safety throughout the ride. The horses were all very cute and quite docile. It was a wonderful experience, and I think I'd definitely come back again.β
