1 / 3Dawn Fraser Baths
π Balmain, NSW
Heritage tidal swimming enclosure on Sydney Harbour in Balmain. Outdoor natural harbour water with changing facilities, a small coffee shop, and shaded seating. Steep stairs make pram access impractical.
A gem in Balmain π We had a pleasant experience in the baths. The space was clean, civil, and respectful patrons all around. The water was refreshing, and views like the water and trees surrounding the space are very relaxing. There are places to sit and chill and basic toilet/shower amenities. The stairs can be steep, so take care when coming in and out. The baths have this historical feel and vibe about it as well. Staff and lifeguards are friendly and helpful.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 6 and up who are comfortable swimming in natural harbour water. The setting is unlike any other Sydney pool β tidal, tree-lined, and historic. Check the Beach Watch site before visiting for water quality. Steep entry stairs rule it out entirely for families with prams or very young toddlers.

βDefinitely worth a visit and a swim. Such an interesting layout that feels like youβve traveled to a far away place, nothing like this in Sydney. $7 entry for an adult and the water can be a merky brown but still great and vibes are high. Lots of people jumping off the wharfs and having fun.β

β(3.5 stars) Some places are so steeped in history itβs pretty much all you can think about when you visit. Dawn Fraser Baths is one such locale. Formerly known as the Elkington Park Baths, itβs a tidal pool in leafy Balmain. Itβs a harbour swim, so you need to do your due diligence with Beach Watch, and tide charts (this one is better closer to high). Itβs encircled by historic pavilions where you can practically see crowds cheering on swimmers like its famous namesake. The history is long and convoluted so itβs best to read it yourself, as collated by Inner West Council on the exterior change room walls. Suffice to say, itβs been popular with locals since the late 19th Century. To access it, you take a time-limited two-hour park in the narrow streets of Balmain, trek across the park, and down a lot of very uneven stairs. Step carefully, theyβre a moving feast, heavily impacted by the roots of the surrounding grand old trees. Standard adult entry is $7.20.β

Overview
Dawn Fraser Baths is a tidal pool on Sydney Harbour in Balmain, formerly known as Elkington Park Baths. The natural harbour water changes with the tide and can run a murky brown at low tide. Facilities include changing rooms, showers, and a small coffee shop. Surrounding trees and water views create a distinctive setting unlike any other Sydney pool. Steep, uneven stairs with root damage make it inaccessible for prams.
