Leichhardt Aquatic Centre is a well-maintained, family-friendly facility that offers a great mix of pools and amenities for swimmers of all levels. The centre features multiple indoor and outdoor pools, including lap lanes, a dedicated teaching pool, and child-friendly splash areas, making it equally suitable for serious training and relaxed weekend visits. Water quality is consistently good, and the temperature across pools is comfortable year-round. The layout is spacious and practical, with plenty of shaded seating and grassy spots outside for families to unwind. The gym and group fitness areas add a nice bonus for anyone wanting a more complete workout routine. Staff are approachable, attentive, and professional swim instructors in particular get strong praise from parents for their patience and clear teaching style. While the centre can get busy during peak hours and swimming lessons, it remains efficiently managed, and facilities are kept clean despite high traffic. Change rooms and amenities are functional and regularly serviced. Overall, Leichhardt Aquatic Centre is a reliable, community-minded venue that delivers a great balance of recreation, fitness, and family appeal, making it a standout swimming option in the Inner West.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families whose children are actively learning to swim — the teaching pool and experienced instructors are the clear strengths. Casual family swimming works well outside lesson and school holiday peak periods. Serious lap swimmers wanting uncontested fast lanes should check the session schedule before arriving.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Swim lessons here are long-running with instructors who receive strong individual praise — worth booking a trial lesson
The cafe is a genuine highlight — plan to stay for food rather than just swim and leave
🎟️Visit outside school holiday periods and lesson times for less crowded general swim access
🚗The mushroom pool closes periodically due to staffing — check before a visit if that's the main draw for your kids

An Aussie Gem. An iconic Sydney swimming pool. It even has an old diving tower - not in use. Unfortunately this beauty will be knocked down soon and replaced with hopefully something just as good.

Wonderful place with the kids!! The cafe is amazing food, coffee, and such lovely people working there! My kids have been doing swimming lessons over the last ten years and I have sent letters of compliments quite a few times, as they have excellent instructors but they have helped facilitate the best times for our family many many times, for which I’m so thankful! We spend so many hours there without a care for leaving, it is very easy going!

Perfect for a hot day unfortunately due to lack of staff, the 'mushroom' pool is always closed, most the pools were used up for classes other than the baby/toddler pool. For $20 a family there isn't really anywhere to splash and have fun

Overview

Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre operates lap lanes, a dedicated teaching pool, children's splash areas, and a rarely-used heritage diving tower. The swim instruction programme has been running for over a decade and instructors receive specific mention in parent reviews for building genuine confidence in young swimmers. The cafe draws praise beyond the usual snack-bar standard. Pool closures due to staffing — particularly the mushroom pool — are a documented issue.
