We’ve done this trip 2 years in a row for mums birthday as we really enjoy it. Catch the first train to Strath, send dad back on the first train home after enjoying some morning tea at the bakery and then mum and I go and explore the Strath Antique Fair before catching the second train back to Mount Barker. It’s a perfect day with the option of 45 minutes in Strath or 5 hours. The Steam Ranger only runs in the cooler months so it’s well worth a winter/spring trip!

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families who want an authentic, unhurried day out that works across all ages including teenagers. The opening windows and rural scenery make screen time irrelevant. Trips from Strathalbyn connect to the town antique fair and bakery, making a natural half-day itinerary. Mobility needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Check the timetable before visiting β€” services run during cooler months, not year-round
⏰Sit near the back of the train to avoid coal dust from the steam engine
🎟️The Strathalbyn stop allows time for the town bakery and antique fair between trains
πŸš—BYO snacks and drinks for longer journeys β€” food is available at stop-over towns

β€œTravelled on the Sunsetter train from Mt Barker to Strathalbyn. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially with my enquiries about assistance with my mobility issues, they were able to easily accommodate for all of my needs. Many thanks to all of the staff at steam ranger, for an enjoyable journey and you polite and friendly help and assistance.”

β€œI like trains so probably biased review. Not to short and not to long. Windows still open so a Window seat is awesome. First time in years my teenager hasn't been glued to a phone. Great places to each lunch at either end and wonderful volunteers running the service. Big congratulations to them. Highly recommend and a great way to spend a morning or day.”

β€œTonight we travelled on the Southern Lights Encore from Goolwa to Victor Harbour & return. What A fantastic idea to run this service! Great to see many people aboard the train and many people waving as we went past both on the way to Victor and on our way back to Goolwa. What A great idea for tourism on the Fleurieu. Well done Steamranger πŸ˜Šβ€
